My research focuses on coastal ecosystem drivers, functioning and connectivity– determining drivers of marine ecosystems and studying their tropho-dynamics – as evidenced through my publications. I have contributed novel research on understanding processes that affect coastal primary production and the role of such processes as ecosystem drivers. For instance, I determined that riverine input was more important than seasonal oceanographic phenomena in driving primary production and subsequently benthic ecosystem functioning in a subtropical region, and showed seasonal changes in the relative contribution of rivers and oceanographic phenomena to driving demersal and pelagic food-webs in the same, using skills with stable isotope mass spectrometers and nutrient analysers, amongst others. I also determined the drivers of primary productivity in a large bight. Other research highlights include, I) studying the international transport of zooplankton and organic matter via eddies in the Mozambique channel – linking oceanographic, chemical and biological data, ii) paleoclimate research in relation to catastrophic events in coastal systems, iii) understanding the drivers of sea-mount ecosystems, iv) basal food-web drivers of the English Channel, and v) ecosystem functioning and community niche ecology in diverse habitats, e.g. sandy beaches and marine lagoons.
