个人简介
• Anthropogenic pressures:
Research has been performed in several Portuguese estuaries (Lima, Cávado, Douro and Sado) in order to understand the effect of inorganic and organic pollutants on macrobenthic and microbial communities. Despite the natural sediment variability appears as the major structuring factor, the presence of contaminants, namely metals and PAHs, acts as a disturbing factor over the natural distribution of these communities.
• Environmental recovery:
In order to recover estuarine and coastal ecosystems, biotechnological tools are being developed that are based on the ability of authoctonous plants and microorganisms to remove contaminants, through bioremediation and phytoremediation processes. The role of the interaction between plants and microorganisms in the removal of heavy metals and organic pollutants from sediments has been studied in several estuaries in Portugal (Douro, Cávado and Lima). Additionally, the feasibility of bioremediation as a clean-up tool of subsurface oil has been evaluated, by studying microbial communities, and their hydrocarbon degradation potential, in beaches that still contaminated several years after the sinking of the Prestige oil tanker (N.W. Spain). Currently, microcosm experiments are being carried out in order to test the efficiency of bioremediation treatments as a clean-up tool for surface and subsurface oil contamination in sandy beaches. These experiments are based on the stimulation of the potential of the autochthonous microbial communities to degrade hydrocarbons. Additionally, controlled laboratory experiments with salt-marsh plants are being developed in order to understand, in one hand, the influence of microorganisms in the efficiency of these plants for the removal of metals, and, on the other hand, the contribution of plants to bioremediation of PAHs by microorganisms. The same approach will be applied for emergent pollutants, a new group of contaminants that includes, among other, metallic nanoparticles and pharmaceutical compounds. These experiments will involve the selection of autochthonous microorganisms that can contribute for the degradation or removal of the target compounds, and the optimization of these processes.
