Bio
I AM A BIOENGINEER PASSIONATE ABOUT PROTEINS AND THEIR FANTASTIC APPLICATIONS IN PURIFICATION, THERAPEUTICS AND MATERIALS.
I started my academic training with a BSc in Applied Chemistry – Biotechnology (2008), and then a MSc in Biotechnology at FCT-NOVA (2010). I took my first steps in protein expression and purification, and mammalian cell culture (3mths, IBET). I was the 1st author of a high impact paper (Biotech Adv, 2010, 195cit), co-author of 5 papers (JCA 2015& 2016), and a team member of the Santander-Totta|NOVA award.
I was then awarded a PhD fellowship from FCT and enrolled the Bioengineering Systems – MIT PT PhD Program, both highly competitive and international. I partook in innovation contests: BioTeams, awarded “best business model” and COHiTEC 2014. My PhD project focused on PROTEIN ENGINEERING FOR PURIFICATION using small proteins as models. Combining computational and experimental tools, I showed for the 1st time that WW domains can act as affinity reagents and established an innovative and highly efficient method for their chemical synthesis, and application in purification (internship 1 year at ITQB-NOVA; RSC Adv, 2015/2016). I also worked with in vitro protein evolution – Phage and Ribosome display (internship - 1 year at Faculty of Pharmacy-ULisboa; 1 month at Nantes University, France; 2 years at FCT-NOVA). Part of my PhD results are an invention and under negotiation with Biotech company. I have undisclosed PhD results, but my know-how led to a cover and review of protein scaffolds for purification (Biotech&Bioeng 2017). In addition, 2PhD students continued my work leading to - Affinity triggered hydrogels, Biotechnol J., 2019.
My expertise was rapidly captured in 2015 by Isogenica (Cambridge, UK), dedicated to PROTEIN ENGINEERING FOR THERAPEUTICS. I expanded skills in “in vitro” evolution by CIS display, developed and implemented cell-based assays, and trained 6 colleagues. My proficiency was recognized by invitations as a lecturer in PepperSchool2018 and a book chapter on the CIS Display. I advanced my project and team management skills in fast-paced working teams and contributed to successful partnerships with Pharma. I did hands-on training ECCAC mammalian cell culture and flow cytometry; IP protection and EnterpriseWISE. As a Junior Researcher at FCT-NOVA since Feb2019, I am working on PROTEIN ENGINEERING FOR MATERIALS IN SENSING AND PURIFICATION. During this year, I showed for the 1st time, that engineered marine proteins have unique stimuli-responsive properties, leading to a collaboration with industry. I was invited for 1 book chapter and 1 oral communication, and I am co-supervising 2PhD students funded by FCT on sensing and purification.
MY RESEARCH ACTIVITY RESULTED IN 11 publications in international and peered reviewed journals (Q1, 247 citations H-index 5), and invitations to write 2 book chapters on Affinity tags and CIS display technology (2019). My work was selected for 11 oral & 11 posters at international conferences, and 1 journal cover. I was invited to present my PhD work in the most prestigious protein engineering summit (PEGSEurope2014). I was invited lecturer on CIS display at PepperSchool2018. My PhD work also supported several projects at the Biomolecular Eng Lab: 1 undergrad in Biochem & 2 MSc in Biotech (with my co-sup.); 2PhD in Bioeng MIT-PT.
At Isogenica, in 2 years, I was promoted to team leader and had project management independence. My scientific input and work ethics were highly esteemed, as I participated in 10 projects extremely successful. As a Junior Researcher, I collaborated actively to write 2 scientific projects (one with Industry); I was invited as a lecturer in MSc and PhDs courses; review editor at Frontiers in Biotech&Bioeng; invited for the organization committee of 2 conf.
I ACQUIRED A STRONG PROFICIENCY IN PROTEIN ENGINEERING AND EVOLUTION, AS NEEDED TO ENVISION INNOVATIVE SCIENTIFIC SOLUTIONS WITH HIGH SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC IMPACT!
