Career Trajectory
Bio
PhD in Organic Chemistry, UCM (1985). Postdoctoral stay at the University of Dundee, Scotland (Fleming Fellowship, 1988-1989). Professor of Organic Chemistry (2009) at USP-CEU and Head of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry from 2013 to 2023. Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Bath, UK (2004-2005). She has supervised 9 PhD theses, and collaborated in 21 national (MEC, MSSSI) and international (NATO, EEC, DoD USA) projects. She has taught Organic Chemistry, General Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Photochemistry, Chemistry and Protein Engineering (Undergraduate) and several postgraduate courses.
In research she started working in the area of organic photochemistry, mainly in the study of the photochemical reactivity of nitrogen compounds. She presented her doctoral thesis in 1985 (extraordinary doctoral prize of that year). She then carried out a one-year postdoctoral stay at the University of Dundee (Scotland) working with Prof. William Horspool with an MEC-Fleming grant. The main scientific achievement of this period was the description of a new photochemical reaction, the aza-di-pi-methane transposition, and the study of its mechanism and synthetic applications.
Since joining the USP-CEU (1996), she has worked on the Design and Synthesis of Pharmaceuticals, PROLIGAR https://www.uspceu.com/investigacion/grupos-investigacion/id/proligar
She has described compounds pharmacologically active against DNA, CDK2, Adrenomedullin and PAM, Estrogen Receptor and in recent years her work has focused on inhibitors of matrix metalloproteinases MMPs, and multi-diane inhibitors involving several enzymes. She is also currently working on the development of positron emission tomography (PET) probes and fluorescent probes to facilitate early cancer diagnosis; the development of dual CK2/HDAC inhibitors, PROteolysis-targeted chimeras (PROTACs) and lysosome-targeted chimeras (LYTACs); and the synthesis of folate conjugates (FC) to target the therapeutic agent to tumor cells, and as a drug delivery strategy for our compounds that are beyond the rule of five (bRo5). The design of LYTACs is the proposed strategy for the degradation of MMP-2, an enzyme present in the extracellular matrix. She has recently initiated several projects in collaboration with other research groups, related to other targets such as an RNA recognition domain, CIRBP, and a PTPRZ1 phosphatase.
