I graduated top of my class in Chemical Engineering (5 years Lic. Chem. Eng.) at the University of Aveiro in 2000. In September 2001, I began working on my PhD in Chemical Engineering at the same research institution, under the supervision of Dra. Isabel M. Marrucho and Dr. João A.P. Coutinho with a PhD fellowship awarded by Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT-MCTES). My PhD Thesis was entitled ‘Thermodynamic Properties of Blood Substituting Liquid Mixtures’ and it was focused on experimental measurements and modeling of thermophysical properties of highly fluorinated liquid compounds. During my PhD Thesis I had the opportunity to do 4 international internships in different research institutions (Institut de Chimie de Clermont-Ferrand, France; Chemical Engineering Department of the University Rovira I Virgili, Spain; Universite de Pau et des Pays de l'Adour, France; Institut de Ciência de Materials de Barcelona, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Spain). I completed my PhD Thesis in November 10th, 2005. Since then I have been awarded with several scholarships (5) and research contracts (2) won in highly competitive and international calls.
In January 2006 I started a post-doctoral fellowship at the Center of Biological Engineering (CEB) from the University of Minho (UM) under the guidance of Dr. Eugénio Ferreira and Dra. Madalena Alves. My work, which included both experimental and modeling research activities, was focused on inline monitoring, prediction and control of biological processes, mainly aerobic wastewater treatment systems.
In April 2008 I became a post-doctoral fellow at the Chemical Process Engineering and Forest Products Research Centre (CIEPQPF) from the University of Coimbra (UC) where I was involved in projects focused on the use of innovative and greener materials/solvents/processes, mostly using supercritical fluid technologies, for the development of value-added products and materials for pharmaceutical/biomedical applications. In April 2011, I was granted with a 3-year post-doctoral fellowship extension and I started working in a new project which aimed the additivation of (bio)polymers to tune their physicochemical and thermomechanical properties.
In January 2014 I got a starting grant Researcher position at CIEPQPF within the ‘Investigador FCT 2013’ program funded by FCT-MCTES which allow me to start treading my own research line in the field of functional soft materials with emphasis on the development of electroactive (bio)polymers/composites.
In February 2018 I applied for an Assistant Researcher position at CIEPQPF within the ‘Concurso Estímulo ao Emprego Científico - Individual 2017’ which was granted in April 2019 (I had the highest rating 9.6/10 in the category of Assistant Researcher in the scientific area of Chemical Engineering). The research plan that I proposed within this application was focused on materials functionalization, as a continuity of the research activities that I have been doing over the last years, now focused on the development of a new generation of safer, versatile and multi-functional antimicrobial biobased coatings using relatively simple and readily scalable synthesis strategies.
So far, and as a result of my research activities, I have co-authored 60 papers in international peer-reviewed journals, mostly at Q1 SJR ranked journals and 6 book chapters. I am the co-author of a Portuguese, European, International (Chinese) patent registration. I have an accumulated impact factor (IF) of more than 340; an average IF per publication of 5.8 (ISI Impact Factor 2021); 2702 citations on 68 indexed documents (or 2177 excluding citations of all co-authors); h-index of 30 (or 27 excluding citations of all co-authors) and h-platinum of 62.7 (or 45.5 excluding citations of all co-authors), based on Scopus, 26th August 2022. I also presented 27 oral/60 poster communications/30 extended abstracts at international scientific meetings. I supervised 11 MSc and 2 PhD Theses, and I am currently supervising 3 MSc students and 2 PhD Thesis in collaboration with industry (BDE). I have also participated as Jury in 25 MSc Thesis and 6 PhD Thesis in Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Biological Engineering and Pharmaceutical Technology.
I was the principal investigator (PI) of 1 project (IF/00455/2013) and the co-PI of a R&D research protocol with TMG Automotive (from 2012 up to 2020) and I’m currently the co-PI of a R&D project also in partnership with TMG Automotive. All together these projects resulted in ~ 475 000 € funding for the UC. I have been also actively participating in other projects (17) in collaboration with more than 25 renowned national/international researchers and research institutions from different research areas, such as: University of Coimbra, New University of Lisbon, University of Aveiro, University of Santiago de Compostela, UNICAMP, Federal University of Bahia; Universidad Nacional de Colombia, TUDelft, etc.
