个人简介
ALT is an infectious disease research enthusiast with research background in Microbiology, Nanotechnology and Molecular Biology. ALT obtained her PhD in Biomedical Sciences (2020, New University of Lisbon), with the main goal of developing a faster, economical and less-invasive approach to diagnose Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PcP). PcP is a major HIV-related illness, rising among immunocompromised non-HIV patients, whose diagnosis still depends on invasive and expensive techniques (bronchofibroscopy followed by PCR or immunofluorescent staining of biological specimens). ALTs innovative project associated newly synthesized recombinant (multi-epitope) antigens of P. jirovecii with gold nanoparticles, to create a strip-based bionanodiagnostic platform for detection of specific anti-P. jirovecii antibodies in patients sera. This approach intends to contribute to improving the management of this life-threatening disease, particularly in low-income and technology-deprived communities. This work led ALT to publish 3 articles as first author in reputed journals (Scientific Reports, Frontiers in Microbiology, European Journal of Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases), to participate in several national and international conferences, to publish a review article and to participate in a book chapter in the field of medical mycology. ALT is also a co-inventor of an already granted patent (PT109078) that protects the production and commercialization of this test. After finishing her PhD, ALT moved to Instituto de Medicina Molecular João Lobo Antunes (iMM), where is now a PostDoc contributing for COVID-19 management in collaboration with national and international industrial partners, with the development of SARS-CoV-2-oriented antiviral solutions. ALT has demonstrated a high potential for pursuing a scientific career and wishes to continue to promote biomedical research that provides valuable contributions to better management of highly relevant infectious diseases.
