个人简介
The study of the adverse effects of contaminants in wildlife is extremely useful for ecological, and also human, risk assessment. Throughout these years, I have progressively developed a multidisciplinary approach that combines extensive field studies and detailed experimental setups to study the effects of man-made chemicals across multiple levels of biological organization; from the molecular to the population level. My goal is to obtain better knowledge and an integrated insight into the relationship between environmental pollutants and wildlife, which is of paramount importance in improving our current environmental risk assessment procedures.
After finishing my Bachelor studies, I worked for an ornithological NGO in the Ebro Delta (Catalunya; October 2006-February 2010). During those years, I have gained extensive knowledge of birds as well as experience and expertise in field studies.
In the Ebro Delta, from March 2009 to June 2010 (part-time), I also worked on a project performed by the Toxicology in Wildlife Group (Institute of Game and Wildlife Research (IREC)- University of Castilla la Mancha – CSIC) to study lead poisoning in waterfowl. After this period, I accepted a scholarship to join the group as a PhD student.
The doctoral scholarship started in June 2010 and continued until March 2015. The dissertation title is “Risk Assessment of Pesticide Seed Treatment for Farmland Birds: The Red-legged partridge case”. During my PhD, I accomplished an internationally competitive research profile. Moreover, my PhD research was highly regarded and attracted interest from the scientific world, the general public and management organizations.
After finishing my PhD, I led the “Anticoagulant rodenticides in the Ebro Delta: relation with the conservation of the Marsh harrier” project. It was funded by the “Fundación Barcelona Zoo”. This project started in June 2015 and finished in September 2016.
In October 2015, I joined the Behavioral Ecology & Ecophysiology Group (BECO) at the University of Antwerp (Belgium) to develop and implement research on the toxicity of perfluoroalkyl substances. I was hired by the university for 14 months. During this period, I developed my research project, “The cascade effect of PFAAs in birds”. For this project, I obtained, firstly a fellowship from the University of Antwerp (10.01.2017-30.09.2017) and later the prestigious Research Foundation-Flanders (FWO) postdoctoral fellowship (01.10.2017-30.09.2021). I also raised additional funds for my project (i.e. FWO krediet aan navorsers (ref 1523119N) and BOF KP from University of Antwerp (ref FFB190029). For this project, I established collaborations with multiple research groups from the University of Antwerp, the University of Ghent, the IDAEA-CSIC (Spain) and Jinan University (China).
In February 2022 I got a postdoctoral 3-year contract funded by Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement and Generalitat de Catalunya (AGAUR; Beatriu de Pinós (BP 2020)) to perform a project about ERA of pesticides used in rice fields in the Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research (IDAEA-CSIC). Four months after joining IDAEA, I got funding (joint with Miguel Cañedo-Argüelles; IDAEA-CSIC) to develop a project on pesticide-salinity interaction and effects on birds and macroinvertebrates (Proyecto Excelencia Severo Ochoa) . In March 2023 my project on rice fields was also subsidized by Generalitat de Catalunya (Next Generation Funding). In December 2022, I was awarded a grant to hire a PhD student that I will co-supervise with Miguel Cañedo-Argüelles and will focus on the impact of oil extraction activities on the biodiversity and indigenous communities of the Amazonia. Finally, in July 2023, a Horizon project about developing a holistic (system-based) ERA of Chemicals led by Wageningen University where I am IP, was granted by the European Commission (SYBERAC, 5.276.607 €; 209.737€ for the part I lead).
Throughout my career, my research has been highly regarded internationally and attracted interest from academia and regulatory agencies. In June 2018 I was recruited by the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) to be one of the expert members (a total of 6 experts from different Member States) of the Working Group establishing the new guidance for risk assessment of pesticides for birds and mammals which will govern in Europe in the next 10 years (published in February 2023). I was part of the European Raptor Biomonitoring Facility COST Action (CA16224). I have also evaluated projects for the Agencia Nacional de Promoción de la Investigación, el Desarrollo Tecnológico y la Innovación (Argentina), the Estonia Research Council and the French National Research Agency (ANR) and about 30 manuscripts in the past 5 years for Q1 journals. I chaired two sessions at international conferences (SETAC 2021; 2023).
