Bio
I have been working at the Center for Neuroscience & Cell Biology (CNC) since 1997.
In 1998, I obtained my BSc degree in Biology – Speciality of Scientific Research (Pre-Bologna process), at the Faculty of Sciences & Technology (FCTUC), University of Coimbra, under the supervision of Prof. Catarina R. de Oliveira and Dr. M. Sancha Santos, with a score of Good (15 values; 0-20 scale).
In 2002, I obtained my MSc degree in Cell Biology (Pre-Bologna process) (FCTUC), under the supervision of Prof. Catarina R. de Oliveira and Dr. M. Sancha Santos, with the highest score available: Suma cum laude.
In 2007, I obtained my PhD degree in Biology – Speciality of Cell Biology (FCTUC), under the supervision of Prof. Ana Cristina Rego and Dr. M. Sancha Santos, again with the highest score available: Suma cum laude.
From 2007-2010, I did my 1st Triennium Post-Doc, under the supervision of Prof. Ana Cristina Rego, Catarina R. de Oliveira and Dr. M. Sancha Santos. During this triennium, I also worked for 9 months at the Neuronal Survival Unit, Wallenberg Neuroscience Center, Faculty of Medicine, Lund University (Sweden), under the supervision of Prof. Patrik Brundin, Maria Björkqvist, David Nicholls and Jia-Yi Li.
From 2010-2016, I did my 2nd and 3rd Triennia Post-Doc, under the supervision of Prof. Paula I. Moreira, Catarina R. de Oliveira and Dr. M. Sancha Santos. During this time, I worked for 6 months at the Biomarkers in Brain Disease Unit, Lund Medical School, Lund University, Lund (Sweden), under the supervision of Prof. Maria Björkqvist.
From 2016-2019, I did my 4th Triennium Post-Doc at CNC, under the supervision of Prof. Paula I. Moreira, Maria Björkqvist, Catarina R. de Oliveira and Dr. M. Sancha Santos.
From January 2019 to August 2020, I have been a Post-Doctoral Researcher at CNC, working at the Metabolism, Mitochondria and Hormones in Brain Disorders Research Line (included in the Cell Signaling & Metabolism in Disease Group from the Metabolism, Aging & Disease Area), headed by Prof. Paula I. Moreira.
Since September 2020, I am a Post-Doctoral Researcher at the Mitochondrial Toxicology and Experimental Therapeutics Research Line (included in the Mitochondria, Metabolism and Disease Group from the Metabolism, Aging & Disease Area, at CNC), headed by Doctor Paulo J. Oliveira.
My current research interests include the subcellular mechanisms involved in cardiometabolic, neurodegenerative diseases (Huntington’s and Alzheimer’s diseases) and in reproductive aging, alongside the potential neuroprotection by non-pharmacological and pharmacological approaches (including anti-diabetes drugs).
During all these years, I have been working and collaborating with different research groups within and outside CNC. This allowed me to obtain different scientific, technical and personal know-how, crucial for me to face metabolic and neurodegenerative diseases and reproductive aging in a more integrated perspective, to challenge my understanding of their gaps, potential crosslinkers and, ultimately, their boundaries. For me, this is the way to contribute to Knowledge and Science that impact our Societies.
