个人简介
I am an ecologist and Assistant Professor in Biology at Rutgers University-Camden. I am interested in understanding how the interplay among local species interactions, chronic stress, and disturbance shape the diversity, composition, and resilience of ecological communities, particularly in the context of rapid anthropogenic change. My students and I use a combination of natural history observations, manipulative experiments, and laboratory trials to determine the mechanisms of these responses. We collaborate with a broad range of scientists, from chemists to ecologists to sociologists to address our questions.
I received my BS from the Evergreen State College in 2002, and my undergraduate thesis addressed potential niche partitioning between two closely related species of tropical ants (Pachycondyla apicalis and P. obsuricornis). I then investigated the role of ant-aphid mutualisms in altering dynamics between a Willow tree, a gall-making midge, and two species of parasitoid wasps (an obligate egg parasitoid and a facultative hyperparasitoid that attacked larvae) as part of my MS in Biology at Western Washington University (graduated in 2004). I received a PhD in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Rice University in 2011. For my dissertation, I assessed the effects of a novel mutualism between an invasive ant (Anoplolepis gracilipes) and native plant (Morinda citrifolia) across the Samoan archiplego on the dynamics of the ants' invasion and the structure of arthropod communities; I also examined the behavioral mechanisms that underlie the differences in the ways that this mutualism affects arthropod communities when A. gracilipes is the ant partner, compared to all co-occurring ant species. I conducted postdoctoral research at North Carolina State University, where I focused on understanding the nutritional and community ecology of ants in NYC. I continue to ask questions about the ecology and evolution of urban arthropods as an assistant professor at Rutgers University-Camden.
