Dr. Amr Shendy is currently an Assistant Professor of Analytical Chemistry - Pesticide Residue Analysis Department - Central Laboratory of Residue Analysis of Pesticides and Heavy Metals in Food at the Agricultural Research Center of the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation.
He has over 14 years of experience in residue and environmental contaminant analyses in foods of plant and animal origins, including pesticides and veterinary drugs as per ISO 17025 requirements for accredited laboratories.
He was previously assigned by the National Food Safety Authority (NFSA) to serve as a rapporteur for the veterinary drug residue committee that was responsible for setting up a new set of technical regulations for veterinary drug maximum residue limits (MRLs) in foods of animal origin, which have been promulgated and published in the Egyptian official magazine. Furthermore, he has experience in Special Foods Registration & Control requirements on the basis of international standards and regulations, including Codex Alimentarius and EU Standards.
He was formerly assigned as a rapporteur for the special foods’ registration and control committee at the Egyptian NFSA. He also participated in the membership of the steering committee, which was responsible for setting up a new regulatory framework for the registration process in NFSA and managing the transition period.
He has many activities, such as establishing acceptance criteria for each special food category (i.e., monographs) as a pre-market approval requirement based on international best practices and standards. Successfully, a monograph for caffeinated energy drinks has been issued on the basis of international standards and regulations concerning the levels of vitamins, RDAs, food additives' permissible use, and labelling claims after transparent discussions with the stakeholders. Furthermore, he has been formerly assigned as an EU-BTSF key contact point for novel and traditional foods.
Dr. Amr Shendy was also a member of the General Directorate for Laboratory Affairs in the NFSA, which is responsible for analysis data collection and evaluation prior to final decisions about shipments release. Dr. Amr was a member of the risk assessment unit in the NFSA that was responsible for setting the national monitoring program of residues in foods and risk evaluation, especially for veterinary drugs and pesticide residues.
He received his B.Sc., in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Cairo University (2007) with an excellent grade and a degree of honor. He has also taken several courses in preparation for his Master's Degree (2009–2010) in Pharmaceutical Science, Analytical Chemistry Department, Faculty of Pharmacy, Cairo University, and has got his MSc. in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Analytical Chemistry Department, Faculty of Pharmacy - Cairo University with an excellent grade and a degree of honor at 2015. The thesis title is "Analytical Study on Some Residual Drugs and Undesirable Compounds in Honey".
Dr. Amr has got his Ph.D., in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Cairo University (June , 2022) with an excellent grade and a degree of honor. The thesis title is "Advanced Analytical Techniques for Screening and Determination of Some Residues and Contaminants in Functional Foods".
He has some peer-reviewed publications, the majority of which focus on food safety and residue analyses in plant and animal origin foods, as well as some functional foods such as traditional herbal medicines, infant formula, and others. He has also successfully published some papers about risk assessment studies describing the acute and chronic exposure effects owing to pesticide residues in fruits and vegetables.
