Bio
Amaia Bacigalupe has a Bachelor of Sociology (University of the Basque Country, UPV/EHU), Master in Public and Social Policies (Universitat Pompeu Fabra) and PhD in Public Health (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona). Currently, she is Professor at the Department of Sociology and Social Work at the UPV/EHU. She previously worked as a researcher at the Biscay Primary Care Research Unit of Osakidetza (Basque-Health Service) and at the Health Studies and Research Service of the Basque Government’s Health Department. During these years she combined her research work with university teaching as an associate professor at the Department of Sociology and Social Work at the UPV/EHU.
She currently leads the Research Group on Social Determinants of Health and Demographic Change, OPIK, a consolidated research group recognized by the Basque Government with the highest qualification, level A. Amaia has undergone two six-year university research evaluations (sexenios); she has led and participated in national and European research projects, publishing more than 70 scientific publications, mostly in JCR impact journals and ten articles in first quartile journals of the Web of Science. These publications were cited more than 650 times at JCR journals and more than 1,900 in Google Scholar (1,390 since 2016). Her H-index is 14 according to the Web of Science and 21 according to Google Scholar (18 since 2016).
Her research and teaching, both undergraduate and postgraduate, revolve consistently around the Sociology of Health and Public Health, with an intersectional view of various axes of inequality (social class and gender, fundamentally), to the social factors influencing population health and health care. She has taught in six official master's degrees, both at the UPV/EHU and other universities in the area of Social Sciences and Health Sciences. Moreover, she has been part of the academic commission of one of these Masters, a professor in two Doctoral Programs and director of six PhD students. With regard to the scientific social transfer of research results, she has led and participated in more than 20 agreements and contracts with social entities and public administrations (article 83 of the Organic Law of Universities) to support the development of health policies and political advocacy activities to drive social transformation. In addition, she has participated in various activities of scientific dissemination, such as scientific exhibitions, conferences and colloquiums. At a managerial level, she has been Academic Secretary of the Department of Sociology 2 and Secretary of the Biscay Campus of the UPV/EHU.
