Bio
Alison originally took a degree in English literature and a professional diploma in publishing and book production, and worked as a writer, editor and indexer for publishing houses in Oxford and London for fifteen years. She subsequently requalified to work in research, with a BSc in psychology (First), a Masters in Social Research and Evaluation (Distinction) and a PhD in psychosocial oncology.
Alison's research focuses on patient, caregiver and practitioner experiences in cancer and palliative care using qualitative and implementation science frameworks to produce applied healthcare interventions. Methods expertise includes qualitative interviewing and analysis, observational and survey methods and stakeholder consultation and co-design, with in-depth expertise in visual methods (graphic elicitation and photo elicitation). Core member of the Pictor technique development team at the University of Huddersfield. Teaching interests include research methods, professional development, collaborative working and reflective practice in applied health care. Alison's current research work is with practitioners, patients and caregivers experiencing and managing malignant bowel obstruction (MBO), working with Dr Jason Boland and collaborators at the Marie Curie Palliative Care Research Centre at Cardiff University to develop a patient-relevant core outcome set, and with Professor Miriam Johnson to explore person-centred decision-making in MBO treatment.
