Dr Bailey is currently a Reader in Neuropharmacology at the Institute of Medical and Biomedical Education and the Institute of Molecular and Clinical Sciences at St George’s.
From 2010-2015, he held a lectureship position at Surrey University and at the Open University. After spending two years as a postdoctoral fellow at Rockefeller University, New York followed by three years working on a European Community funded project on the genetics of addiction, he embarked on a Research Councils UK Academic Fellowship at Surrey.
Dr Bailey has built his own research group primarily with PhD students (11 since 2009) working in the field of drug, alcohol and nicotine addiction, and recently food security. He has extensive expertise in preclinical models of drug addiction and co-morbid psychiatric disorders, and in neurochemistry.
Dr Bailey has over 60 research publications to his name, including articles in Biological Psychiatry, Molecular Psychiatry, Neuropsychopharmacology, Scientific Reports and Addiction Biology. He has also attracted significant research funding (EU, Public Health England, Royal Society, the Biotechnical and Biological Sciences research Council and FAPESP).
He held a 400,000 euro EC grant for investigating markers of toxicity and mood during the transition from cigarette smoking to electronic cigarette use (SmokeFreeBrain). His research has been recognised by the Bill Bowman Lectureship Award (2014) and the Aptuit Prize (2010) from the British Pharmacological Society (BPS) based on outstanding published work in Integrative Pharmacology.
Dr Bailey has been on the editorial board of the British Journal of Pharmacology since 2013.
