I am a researcher working at the Center for Cognitive Medicine at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The research that I am involved in is assessing the effects of novel pharmacological interventions on cognitive and electrophysiological performance associated with cholinergic function. The focus of much of this research is on later life cognitive complaints and pathologies, including geriatric depression, mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer’s disease, as well as cognitive complaints following menopause and chemotherapy. While these research studies have been my focus for the past year, I have also been involved in the setup and maintenance of external clinical trials that we are conducting in the laboratory. The most notable of these roles has been as the study coordinator and MRI/PET contact for the start-up of the Alzheimer’s disease Neuroimaging Initiative 3 (ADNI3) here at VUMC. During the past year, I have also fostered institutional research collaborations with scientists at the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center and the Vanderbilt Center for Neuroscience Drug Discovery. Prior to moving to Nashville, I spent five years working at the Functional Neuroimaging Laboratory at the University of Newcastle, in which I completed my doctoral thesis. My thesis topic focused on examining the effect of neuromodulation by anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the motor cortex on response conflict and cortical processing, as recorded by EEG. Throughout the course of my research in this area I examined the effects of anodal tDCS in both healthy young and older adults as well as in chronic stroke patients. In addition to this project, I have worked on a number of collaborative projects looking at the variability of cognitive control in late adolescence and early adulthood, the effects of sports related concussion on cortical functioning, and the impact of cerebrovascular risk factors on both white matter damage and cognitive control processes. This additional research culminated in a research visit to the National Cheng-Kung University in Tainan, Taiwan, to setup a project looking at cardiovascular risk factors on cognition in older adults in the laboratory of Professor Shulan Hsieh. I have considerable expertise in the analysis of both behavioural and electrophysiological data. I am proficient in a number of advanced statistical analysis techniques including Bayesian model selection, mediation analysis and factor analysis. I have worked extensively with quantitative EEG data from data collection through processing to analysis of either event-related potentials or oscillatory activity derived from the time-frequency domain. In addition, I have been developing my skills at processing structural and functional MRI data. I have excellent written and oral communication, having published 17 articles to date.
