my Research Interests
Even though most a lot of physics is based on the concept of thermal equilibrium, this is a stark idealisation. From everyday life to laboratory experiments, the most common condition of matter is a continuous flow of energy and particles through a system of interests, a condition known as "non-equilibrium" (perhaps for the lack of a better name). When non-equilibrium conditions are maintained in a system with strong interactions, such as a viscous fluid or a strongly correlated quantum liquid, stunning phenomena can be observed, such as complicated spatio-temporal patterns. I am interested in the physics of interacting systems out of equilibrium where a third ingredient comes into play: quantum coherence, i.e. the capability of quantum mechanical systems to encode nontrivial information not just in the probabilities to observe them in certain physical states, but in the full, quantum mechanical wave function.
