Career Trajectory
Bio
Alberto Ortolani received the master’s degree (cum laude) in physics from the University of Florence, Florence, Italy, in 1995 and the Ph.D. degree in physical modeling for environmental protection from the University of Bologna, Bologna, Italy, in 2011.
In 1996, he had temporary contracts to work on X-ray stellar spectroscopy with Palermo Astronomical Observatory, Palermo, Italy. From 1997 to 1998, he worked with SMA Company (Systems for the meteorology and the environment), Florence, on satellite synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) imagery. In 1997, he won a three-year Marie Curie Grant to work on astrophysics, then declined to continue the career on remote sensing. From 1998 to 2002, he worked with the Foundation for the Climate and the Sustainability (FCS), Florence, on remote sensing applications to the sea and the atmosphere. Since 2002, he has been with the Institute for the BioEconomy (former Institute for the Biometeorology), Italian National Research Council (CNR), Florence, where he is a Senior Researcher. Since 1997, the working activities have been developed in the framework of Consorzio LaMMA (former LaMMA project), Florence, Italy, where he is assigned by CNR and he is the Head of the Atmospheric Research Division, focused on project developments in satellite, radar and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) meteorology, atmospheric modeling and data assimilation, and meteo-based services for maritime transportation. Since 2015, he has been the CNR Representative in the Tuscany industrial district of yachting and ports. Since 2018, he has been teaching physics of the atmosphere at the master’s degree in physical and astrophysical sciences with the University of Florence. He has been involved in the NEFOCAST Project.
