His research has always dealt with the application of heterogeneous catalysis to green/sustainable chemistry processes (photocatalysis, selective reduction, biomass valorization, etc) and the chemistry of olive oil. This sector is of paramount importance in Andalusia. In this sense, he has participated in several knowledge-transfer actions to the olive oil sector. One of the projects he supervised was awarded the 2014 Caja Rural Foundation award to R+D+I projects in Agrifood industry. FQM-162 research group has an integral vision of catalysis (synthesis of systems-characterization-catalytic application), having extensive experience in all these steps. Among the processes in which the group has been working for more than 20 years, are chemo and enantioselective hydrogenations, using molecular hydrogen or transferred from a donor (MPV process) and photocatalysis applied to the mineralization of pollutants present in water or selective oxidations (non-aqueous media) or hydrogen production from biomass derivatives through photoreforming. In the last 10 years the research has been focused on the valorization of the so-called platform molecules from biomass (furfural and glycerol).
