Career Trajectory
Bio
Alberto Gil de la Fuente was born in Madrid in 1990. He studied Computer Engineering in San Pablo-CEU Universities. He graduated in 2013 obtaining the award to the best academic record of his promotion. In 2016, he finished his MSc in Computer Engineering at Complutense University, in Madrid. During the MSc, he did a period abroad of 6 months in Linköping University, Sweden. During his studies, Alberto combined both work and education. He worked as a database administrator in one of the biggest Spanish IT companies (Informatica El Corte Ingles: IECISA). He obtained certifications from Oracle, DB2, MySQL or MongoDB, some of the main database technologies used nowadays.
He finished his Ph.D. in Life and Science Technologies at San Pablo-CEU University (2015-2019) developing an on-line tool to help with metabolite identification. During his PhD, he did a researching stay in the University of Alberta (Wishart Lab, which leads the largest metabolomic database in the world, HMDB) for 6 months in 2018. He continued the research in the metabolomics field, which he believes that it will bring the most significant advances in the systems biology field. Alberto is the author of 14 articles in journals (11 Q1, 2Q2, 1Q1), 4 book chapters and 11 communications in international conferences. He is currently a lecturer in CEU-San Pablo University where he has taught 1000+ hours of Bachellor Degree and 100+ hours of Master Degree in the subjects: programming, algorithms and data structures, database management, proteomic and metabolomic data analysis and analysis of massive data: parallel programming, telemedicine and decision support systems, both in Spanish and English. He holds the official credentials for associated professor from the Spanish Ministry of Education (Profesor Contratado Doctor by ANECA) and he holds a current six-year research evaluation (sexenio) by ANECA. He earnt the research award Ángel Herrera in the 2022 for thepublication 10.1002/pmic.202100328.
His doctoral thesis entitled "Design, Validation And Implementation Of A Software Tool For Metabolites Annotation And Identification" has as a main result a web tool called CEU Mass Mediator (CMM) that supports the metabolite annotation and identification using expert knowledge as a decision support system using the analytical information from Liquid Chromatography (LC), Capillary Electrophoresis (CE) and soon Ion Mobility (IM) and Tandem Mass Spectrometry (MS/MS) to aid during metabolite annotation. It can be accessed through http://ceumass.eps.uspceu.es/.
This web tool has an average of 400 users around the world (Germany, USA, China, Poland, Brazil, Colombia, UK, Spain, etc.) The average session time is 15 minutes; therefore, the users are really using and working with it. It has established collaborations with the University of Alberta (Wishart Lab), Leibniz Institute For Natural Product Research and Infection Biology (Hans Knöll Institute) or the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences (Université de Genève). The Analytical Science Innovation Awards 2018 awarded it as one of the 15 analytical innovations.
