Apart from a central role in making AUB a leading center of knowledge on tobacco product testing and toxicants, his research has brought attention to AUB in the international press, including such venues as the front page of the New York Times Sunday Edition, Newsweek, and CNN. Eager to marshal science in the service of public health and a cleaner environment, Dr. Shihadeh was also active in efforts to ban the operation of diesel-fueled small passenger vehicles and the sale of leaded fuel in Lebanon, and to pass Lebanon’s first comprehensive tobacco control law. He has also brought attention to the deleterious health effects of distributed diesel generators in residential areas.
