Career Trajectory
Bio
My interests and expertise are in neurobiology, physiology and immunology. Currently, the main focus of my research revolves around identifying signaling pathways of vagal afferent neurons that innervate the gastrointestinal tract and determining mechanisms by which these are altered in pathophysiological conditions, such as obesity, hypertension and diabetes.
I first started my research career in the field of neglected infectious diseases studying the mechanisms underlying the pathophysiology of Leptospira infection, as part of my master’s project, in a very prestigious institute of public health research in Brazil. I was mentored by Dr. Mitermayer Reis and Dr. Eliana Reis and I had the opportunity to use human blood samples to investigate the production of reactive oxygen species in patients with leptospirosis. During my PhD, I started working with inflammation and liver diseases at the Center for Gastrointestinal Biology (CGB) with Dr. Gustavo Menezes, a leading expert in liver immunology, where I was trained to do in vivo imaging of the liver using a confocal microscope. With this in vivo approach, we were able to image the hepatic environment and capture videos of cell migration and differentiation and phagocytosis. The lab was chosen to be one of the Nikon Center of Excellence in 2016 and became a reference for in vivo imaging in Latin America. I also had a chance to start working with transgenic mouse lines to selectively ablate immune cells, or to try to prevent/reduce liver damage in our model of sterile injury. In the last year of my PhD, my co-advisor Dr. Andre Oliveira and I started investigating the neuro-immune axis that coordinates some of the immune functions in the liver. In the same year I contacted Dr. Guillaume “Will” de Lartigue at Yale University and applied for a postdoc position in his lab to work with neurobiology and physiology of gut-brain signaling.
During my postdoc, I had the opportunity to learn several techniques – all developed and validated by Dr. de Lartigue, to target and manipulate subpopulations of sensory neurons. That allowed me to use optogenetics and chemogenetics approaches in live freely behaving animals, in addition to use caspase mediated ablation to study the necessity of these neurons under physiological conditions and a viral tracer to map the polysynaptic circuits of vagal sensory neurons to determine the brain regions that receive vagal information. In 2018 Dr. de Lartigue moved his lab to the University of Florida, where we have been developing calcium imaging of vagal sensory neurons to record the real time activity pattern of these neurons in response to physiological stimuli, such as intestinal distention and nutrients, hormones, and cardiovascular stimuli.
In 2022, Dr. De Lartigue was offered a position at Monell Chemical Senses Center. I'm currently a Research Associate for Monell and University of Pennsylvania (UPenn).
