Bio
Dr. Hsu is a viral immunologist with ten years of research experience in influenza virus infection and innate immune responses. He is a research acadamic (Level C Academic - Senior Lecturer) at The University of Newcastle, one of the TOP research institutes in respiratory immunology and diseases. His research has been focused on the molecular circuitry that is mechanistically important in the immunopathogenesis of influenza virus infection in health and in the context of chronic airways diseases “Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease” and asthma.
In 2021, he joined the Signature Research Program in Emerging Infectious Diseases at Duke-National University of Singapore (NUS) Medical School, furthering his research in infectious viruses, human immunity, and therapeutics.
His scientific journey began during his PhD, where he delved into intracellular signaling circuitry and virus-host interactions. Dr. Hsu's passion for science and curiosity in different research experiences led him to train with internationally renowned scientists, including Prof. Deborah Middleton at CSIRO-Australian Animal Health Laboratory in Melbourne (H5N1 work in BSL3 laboratory) and Prof. Takashi Fujita at Institute of Virus Research Kyoto University. These experiences, coupled with his strong leadership and innovation skills, enabled him to establish successful multidisciplinary collaborations that resulted in high-impact publications and significant grant applications.
Progressive development of his research leadership and innovation has consistently led his team and collaborators to successful multidisciplinary grant applications as a principal investigator, high impact publications, and promoting institution’s research excellence. Dr. Hsu's research excellence led to numerous accolades, including the prestigious Ann Woolcock Young Investigator Award in 2012, a University career development award in 2013, and an AstraZeneca research fellowship from 2016 to 2018. He has published widely in influenza, coronavirus, innate immunity, cell biology, respiratory diseases, and nanoparticle therapeutics, which demonstrates his highly collaborative nature.
Dr. Hsu's reputation as a leader in the field of viral immunology is evidenced by his ability to engage with internationally renowned experts to successfully publish a research editorial on emerging viruses and novel therapeutic strategies. This editorial achieved international impact and was recognised as the Finalist of the Frontiers Spotlight Award in 2019. His expertise and accomplishments have also resulted in numerous invitations to review manuscripts, theses, grants and government research centres national and internationally.
His career highlights include
58 total publications (10 first / 5 senior ; total citation = 2774 ; H-Index = 33 (GS) ; FWCI = 2.15)
1 patent (and 1 being prepared)
3 Research awards / 7 travel awards
