Aijun Deng

Aijun Deng received the B.S. degree in meteorology from the Chengdu Institute of Meteorology, Chengdu, China, in 1983, the M.S. degree in atmospheric science from the Chinese Academy of Science, Beijing, China, in 1986, and the M.Engr. degree in computer science and engineering and the Ph.D. degree in meteorology from The Pennsylvania State University, in 1999. His Ph.D. research focused on modeling of atmospheric shallow and deep convection. From 2000 to 2017, he was a Research Associate and then a member of the Graduate Faculty, Department of Meteorology, The Pennsylvania State University. He is currently affiliated with Utopus Insights Inc., a subsidiary of Vestas, a global wind turbine manufacturer, as the Chief Meteorologist, providing meteorological support for the company’s Scipher products including Fx for wind and solar power forecasting, based on regional and global NWP models. His research interests include the many aspects of numerical weather prediction (NWP) sciences, including atmospheric boundary layer processes, convection, data assimilation, NWP realtime applications, air quality modeling, and the modeling of atmospheric trace gas transport. He contributed to the development of the weather research and forecasting (WRF) modeling system and implemented several model components/schemes into WRF. He has been delivering customers automated operational weather forecast for extreme weather, such as icing and lightning.
