Career Trajectory
Bio
Dr. Aideen Ryan is a Lecturer Above the Bar in the School of Medicine, National University of Ireland, Galway and is a member of the Biomedical Sciences Institute. Dr Ryan has a BSc. in Biochemistry and Microbiology from NUI Galway and a PhD in Medicine from University College Cork. Her PhD research focused on the role of Fas Ligand and immune suppression and cancer, specifically in the area of colon cancer. Dr. Ryan started her post-doctoral career in Prof. Laurence Egan's lab at NUIG, where she studied the role of NF-kappaB in colon cancer metastasis using molecular and cellular technologies, as well as other disease models. Following this, Dr. Ryan moved to the Immunology Group within the Regenerative Medicine Institute (REMEDI).
Dr Ryans expertise lies in tumour immunology, stromal cell immunology and evaluation of immune responses in pre-clinical tumour and allogeneic transplantation models.
Dr Ryans Scientific Accomplishments to date include:
o Identification of the role of Fas ligand in immune suppression in a pre-clinical model of colon cancer
o Identification of the effect of stromal cell differentiation on immune-regulatory ligand expression and host immune responses in vivo
o Characterization of the role of NF-κB in the molecular regulation of colon cancer metastasis and host anti-tumour immunity in vivo
o Identification of novel targetable immunomodulatory functions of stromal cells in the tumour microenvironment
o Identification of the role of Cyclophosphamide in potentiating macrophage and NK activation and monoclonal antibody therapy for the treatment of cancer
As demonstrable evidence of externally validated research excellence, Dr Ryan has secured over €3.5 million as PI /co-PI in independent internationally reviewed research funding. She has published 50 peer-reviewed research papers, including 20 original research articles in the last 3 years. Most recently, Dr Ryan has been the recipient of an SFI Frontiers for the Future PI Award as well as a Starting Investigator Independent Research Award (SIRG). Dr Ryan has received numerous awards for research excellence, including Research Paper of the Year; NUI Galway Presidents Award for research excellence, an IRC sponsored ‘Lindau Nobel Laureate Conference Award’, The Deans Award for Reseacrh and Graduate Studies (2021) and the ‘EACR Young Scientist Award’. Her research vision is to identify therapeutically targetable stromal cell mediated mechanisms of immune suppression in the tumour microenvironment with a view to enhancing anti-tumour immune responses, and improve therapeutic outcomes in cancer.
Dr Ryans current research focusses on understanding the immune/stromal cell contexture of the colon tumour microenvironment including:
(1) Investigation of Tumour-stromal cell interactions and subsequent effects on immune cell infiltration (2) Role of Programmed Death-Ligand 1 (PD-L1) in tumour cell immune evasion in the colon cancer microenvironment (3) Influence of stromal cell activation and glycosylation on immune cell infiltration in colon tumours (4) sensitizing the tumour microenvironment to immunotherapeutic targeting.
