个人简介
Agustín Sánchez-Lavega (Bilbao, 26 November 1954) is Professor of Applied Physics at the Bilbao School of Engineering (University of the Basque Country / Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea UPV/EHU) and is a leading astrophysicist whose research work focuses on the study of the solar system. He graduated in Physics in 1978 at the then University of Bilbao, now University of the Basque Country UPV-EHU. Between 1980 and 1987 he worked at the German-Spanish Astronomical Centre - Max Planck Institut für Astronomie at the Calar Alto Observatory in Almería (Spain). At the same time, in 1986 he obtained his PhD in Physical Sciences at the UPV-EHU, receiving the Extraordinary Doctorate Award from the Faculty of Sciences. In 1987 he joined the Department of Applied Physics I at the Bilbao School of Engineering of the UPV-EHU, where he has been working ever since. In 1989 he promoted the creation of the Photothermal Techniques Laboratory for the study of the thermal properties of matter, in the development of which he participated for 14 years. Simultaneously,in the mid-1990s he founded the Planetary Sciences Group of the UPV-EHU and in 2008 he promoted the creation of the Aula Espazio Gela and its Astronomical Observatory, which is the first entity in the Basque Country dedicated to the teaching of Astronomy, Astrophysics and Space Sciences at university level. He has been member of the European Space Agency (ESA) solar system advisory committee (2004-2006), member of the board of the Spanish Astronomy Society (2007-2010), head of the Department of Applied Physics I of the UPV/EHU (2009-2016), member of the Board of Trustees of the Ikerbasque Science Foundation (2009-2015) and of the National Astronomy Commission (2015-2020). He has also been manager of the Astronomy and Astrophysics projects (2017-2019) and member of the scientific programme of the European Extremely Large Telescope of the European Southern Observatory (since 2015).
His scientific research is dedicated to the study of planetary atmospheres. His research is based on theoretical studies and observations made with large ground-based telescopes and with the Hubble Space Telescope, as well as those obtained with instruments onboard the space missions Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 (NASA), Galileo (NASA), Cassini (NASA, ESA), Curiosity rover (NASA), Venus Express (ESA, he was co-investigator on the VIRTIS instrument), Mars Express (ESA, principal investigator on the VMC camera) and Mars 2020 rover Perseverance (NASA, co-investigator on the MEDA instrument). He is also co-investigator on the MAJIS instrument onboard the JUICE (Jupiter Ice Moon Explorer) space mission, which will explore Jupiter and its satellites. He is also principal investigator of the PlanetCam UPV/EHU instrument.
Among his most outstanding research are the study of the winds of the planet Saturn, its major storms known as Great White Spots, its hexagonal and ribbon waves, anticyclones and the discovery of the polar vortex in the southern hemisphere of the planet. On Jupiter, the study of its winds and moist convective storms of planetary scale as well as its giant anticyclones as BA (whose name he proposed) and the Great Red Spot. Also notable are his studies of the winds and superrotation of Venus, its polar vortex and its waves and clouds. Other works are those on Mars including the discovery of the highest plume ever observed, their Global Dust Storms and different type of cloud formations. The study of Titan's methane storms and the magnetic field on exoplanets, as well as the impact of an asteroid with Jupiter in 2009 and the dynamics of the atmospheres of Uranus and Neptune.
Since 1987 he has taught courses in Physics, Astronomy and Astrophysics, Astrodynamics and Physics of Planetary Atmospheres, among others, in the undergraduate and master's degree courses taught at the Bilbao School of Engineering of the UPV/EHU. He has supervised 20 doctoral theses. In 2009 he promoted and since then he is responsible for the Master in Space Science and Technology of the UPV/EHU. He is the author of the postgraduate textbook "An Introduction to Planetary Atmospheres" published in 2011 by Taylor-Francis and CRC Press (USA). Throughout his professional career he has developed an important outreach activity and pro-am collaborations.
He has received the among others, the following awards:
• David Bates Medal in planetary and solar system sciences of the European Geophysical Union (2020).
• Euskadi Research Award, Basque Country Government (2016)
• Award in Teaching and Outreach of Physics at University Level from the Spanish Royal Society of Physics - BBVA Foundation (2014).
• Prize of the Real Sociedad Española de Física-Fundación BBVA to the best article in Revista de Física in 2009
• Javier Gorosabel" pro-am collaboration prize of the Spanish Astronomy Society awarded together with R. Hueso, D. Martínez-Delgado and others (2018).
