Bio
Agnieszka Synowiec is an associate professor at the University of Agriculture in Krakow in the Department of Agroecology and Crop Production. She earned her Ph.D. at the University of Agriculture in Krakow in 2004, based on the dissertation "Studies on herbicide resistance of botanical varieties of Avena fatua (L) to the selected herbicides." In this work, she proved an intraspecific variability in the sensitivity/resistance to ACC-ase herbicides among nine botanical varieties of this species localized in southern Poland. After the defense, she obtained the assistant professor position at the Department of Agricultural Ecology, the University of Agriculture in Krakow. In 2009-2010, she worked as a visiting lecturer in the lab of Prof. Mahesh Upadhyaya at the Faculty of Land and Food Systems, the University of British Columbia, in Vancouver, Canada. During that time, she was working on (1) the effect of isoxaflutole on mycorrhizal symbiosis in corn; (2) the phytotoxic effect of the main compounds of clove essential oil against broccoli. In 2018-2019 she was awarded MSC/LeStudium Fellowship at the University of Orleans in France, where she worked on the herbicidal potential of microencapsulated peppermint oil. In 2017-2020, she was the main investigator in the national grant to identify and manage herbicide-resistant weeds in Poland, i.e., Apera spica-venti, Alopecurus myosuroides, Centaurea cyanus, and Papaver rhoeas. Her research interests are (1) the allelopathic potential of essential oils of temperate climate origin and (2) the ecological significance of herbicide-resistant weeds. She is also a member of the Germination and Early Growth working group within the European Weed Research Society.
