个人简介
Prof. José María Delgado García was born in Seville in 1945, and graduated in Medicine and Surgery in the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Seville, gaining the degree of Doctor, with Special Award, in 1972. He completed his medical training with studies in Psychiatry in the Faculties of Medicine of the Central University of Barcelona (Prof. R. Sarró) and Seville (Prof. F. Alonso-Fernández). The scientific work of Prof. Delgado García began in the Department of Physiology of the Faculty of Medicine, Seville, under the direction of Prof. D. Mir (1970-72). His first work was centered on the physiology of the limbic system, particularly in the functional and electrophysiological relationships between the amygdala and the hippocampus. Subsequently (1972-75), he worked in the Department of Physiology of the Faculty of Medicine of the Autonomic University, Madrid, with Prof. J.M. Rodríguez Delgado on aspects related with neuronal control of emotional behavior and on the genesis of ultradian rhythms in vertebrates. During that period, he carried out two post-doctoral stays in the Universities of Oxford (Prof. J. Stein) and Sussex (Prof. R. Boakes), broadening studies on topics related with the physiological basis of learning and on the role of the cerebellum in motor co-ordination. In 1976, he went to the USA, where he stayed for two years in the Universities of Iowa and New York (Prof. R. Baker). During his stay in the USA, he made a long series of experimental studies on the motor and pre-motor neuronal organization that controls and regulates ocular movement in the vertebrates – studies that are now classics, as indicated by his chapter in the recent Nature Encyclopedia of Life Sciences . His scientific training was completed with a stay at the Sorbonne, where, in collaboration with Prof. A. Berthoz, he studied the activity of the central nervous system regulating the maintenance of posture during stance and movement. Subsequently (1982- ), Prof. Delgado García has made numerous brief working stays in various centers of England, France, Brazil, Mexico, Belgium, Uruguay, Venezuela, Germany, and the USA. After returning to the University of Seville (1978), Prof. Delgado García created the Neuroscience Laboratory within the University’s Faculty of Biology. From 1978 to 1999, successive generations of researchers interested in the field of Neuroscience have been trained in this specialization. In particular, the subject of Techniques in Neurophysiology has been an authentic hothouse, stimulating an interest in Neuroscience for more than 30 researchers who now work in national centers (Instituto Cajal of the CSIC, and the Universities of Alicante, Barcelona, Miguel Hernández, Santander, Santiago, Valencia, etc.) and foreign ones (San Louis Medical Center, Imperial College, Wurzburg, MIT, NYU Medical Center, UCL-England, etc.). Prof. Delgado García has directed 25 Doctoral Theses (PhDs) and more than 30 graduate and post-graduate dissertations. Many of his ex-students have gone on to become university lecturers and workers in Spanish and Latin American research centers. The research activity of Prof. Delgado García has been financed by private bodies (Fundación Areces, Fundación La Caixa, Fundación Rodríguez Pascual, Aventis-Pharma) and public ones (CICYT, DGICYT, PETRI program, FISS program of the Health Ministry, Andalusian Research Plan) of Spain, and by international organisms (NIH of the USA, the French CNRS, Science, Biotech and Framework programs of the EC, European Science Foundation, and International Brain Research Organization). At present, Prof. Delgado García is directing various projects focused on the study of i) the physiology of the ocular and facial motor systems in vertebrates as models for the study of motor systems in general; ii) the role of the cerebellum in sensori-motor co-ordination; iii) the role of hippocampus in cognitive processes; iv) the physiological basis of learning, above all referred to the mechanisms underlying the acquisition of new motor abilities; and v) neuronal capacity for functional recovery following different types of central and peripheral nervous system lesion. Prof. Delgado García has published more than 260 works in international journals of the field (Journal of Neuroscience, Brain, Current Biology, Journal of Physiology, Neuron, Journal of Neurophysiology, Neurology, PNAS-USA, Nature Comm., Trends in Neurosciences, etc.). He has lectured in practically all the Spanish universities, and in research centers and hospitals related in one way or another with Neuroscience. He has also delivered lectures and/or conducted seminars (more than 260) in different centers in the USA, Brazil, Colombia, Uruguay, Chile, France, Mexico, England, Germany, Belgium, Portugal, Venezuela, Peru, Canada, Slovenia, Austria, Italy, and Japan, presenting his work in numerous (more than 430) national and international congresses.
