个人简介
The scientific and clinical activity of Prof. Borriello developed at the University of Campania "Luigi Vanvitelli", starting from the training experiences during the PhD in Cellular Biochemistry and the Specialty School in Clinical Biochemistry, obtained at this University, up to her entire professional career at the Vanvitelli University, where she is at present Full Professor of Biochemistry (since December 2022), member of the Department of Precision Medicine and Biologist (Dirigente Biologo) at the Policlinico Hospital of University of Campania “L. Vanvitelli”, Laboratories of Clinical and Molecular Medicine, UOC Clinical and Molecular Pathology, Unit of Clinical Biochemistry.
Prof. Borriello teaches Biochemistry at the Degree Course in Medicine and Surgery, based in Caserta, and at many Specialization Schools (Pediatrics, Nutrition Sciences and Clinical Biochemistry) of the School of Medicine.
Since 2018, she is also professor of Biochemistry at the Degree Course in Medicine and Surgery erogated in English Language. At this Degree Course, she is member of the Technical-Pedagogical Commission. Further teaching assignments are carried out in numerous Degree Courses for Health Professions.
Since 2008, she has been a member of the Academic Board of the Doctorate in Biochemical and Biotechnological Sciences and throughout this period she has trained doctoral students and post-doctoral students, addressing them in molecular and cellular research. Some of these currently occupy a position (type A researchers, RTD-A) at the University of Campania.
She served as member of Evaluation Commissions for the extension of RTD-A contracts erogated by University of Campania, of numerous Evaluating Commissions for the awarding of research grants and scholarships announced by the University, for admission to the Doctoral Course in Biochemical and Biotechnological Sciences.
Since 2018, she is CNR (National Council of Research) Associate Researcher, at the Institute of Food Science (Avellino), promoting scientific and design exchanges between the University of Campania and the CNR.
As a principal investigator of a research unit or as research participant, she has been involved in numerous (> 20) research projects admitted to financing on the basis of competitive calls for peer review, such as Projects of Relevant National Interest (PRIN) and Projects research programs funded by the Italian Association for Cancer Research (AIRC). The results of these researches have been published in international journals of medium/high impact and have led to important advances in the 1. molecular mechanisms underlying the control of proliferation and progression of the cell division cycle; 2. molecular bases of red blood cell pathologies, congenital polycythemias and pathologies with altered response to hypoxia; 3: molecular bases of the effects of natural dietary compounds in cancer prevention and treatment.
Prof. Borriello's scientific interests fall within the biochemistry and molecular and cellular biology of tumors, of mesenchymal stem cells and hematological hereditary diseases. Numerous publications have addressed the study of the regulation of proteins involved in the control of the cell division cycle and the role of natural molecules with antioxidant activity in cell differentiation and proliferation. Additional studies addressed the molecular mechanisms underlying genetic alterations in patients with hereditary spherocytosis, and Wolfram syndrome. She has also investigated the effects of iron overload on the proliferative and differentiation capacities of mesenchymal stromal cells derived from bone marrow, addressing from a point mechanistic point of view, two of the major complications of thalassemia, iron overload and osteoporosis. Furthermore, she has long contributed to the effort to understand the molecular bases of congenital erythrocytosis, in particular due to defects in the oxygen sensing mechanism.
She is the author of about 70 papers in extenso in international journals reviewed on Scopus and WoS. Presents an HI (Hirsch Index) of 29 (Scopus) with more than 2500 citations.
She serves as Editorial Board Member of various journals including: Cells (MDPI), Diseases (MDPI), Frontiers in Endocrinology and Frontiers in Oncology.
During her career, she has been Visiting Researcher at “The Laboratories of Chemistry and Immunology” of Prof. G. Michael Blackburn and Dr. Lynda Partridge, University of Sheffield, UK.
She established several scientific collaborations with well known scientists such as Prof. Perrotta (Vanvitelli University) Prof. Achille Iolascon, (University of Naples “Federico II”, CEINGE, Naples), Prof. Anna Savoia, TIGEM, Naples, at present University of Trieste, Dr. Gianluca Forni, Ospedali Galliera, Genova.
