My recent research is geared towards reconstructing regional Antarctic paleoenvironments as far back as 40 Ma. I am focusing on the Drake Passage-Scotia region (West Antarctica) to provide a better understanding of the effects of tectonics on the evolution of gateways, marine circulation, sedimentation patterns and ice-sheet evolution. I am investigating sedimentation patterns in two periods of time and locations. First, in the late Quaternary (Pleistocene; ~0.7 Ma) sediments of Ona Basin (Scotia Sea), I am decoding the presence of different water masses and the spatial variability of bottom current pathways by means of morphological and sedimentary processes analyses using high-resolution geophysical, bathymetric and oceanographic data. Second, in the late Eocene-middle Miocene (~37-15 Ma) sediments of the South Orkney Microcontinent (Weddell Sea), I conduct detailed sedimentary facies analyses to delineate the opening/deepening of the Drake-Scotia gateway and their influence on Southern Ocean and ice sheet configurations. This study is based on sediment cores from the Ocean Drilling Program Site 696 and includes sedimentary, mineralogical and organic matter investigation. The mineralogical investigation includes clay formation and past environments as recorded by clays. My current research is focusing on investigating the Late Quaternary geological, paleoclimate and paleoceanographic development of the NE Greenland shelf. Also, I am analysing secondary school teacher’s knowledge, beliefs, and attitudes about Climate Change, to better constrain the boundaries of climate literacy.
