My research revolves around the efficacy and safety evaluation, phytochemical characterization of indigenous South African flora for practical applications towards enhancing food and nutrition security for the growing population. The increasing challenges associated with the sustainable production of high quality medicinal, horticultural and ornamental plants geared me towards exploring the application of simple plant biotechnology approaches for enhancing productivity and conservation of different plants. I have conducted extensive research on the potentials of conventional plant growth regulators (cytokinins) as well as environmentally-friendly biostimulants such as seaweed extracts, smoke-water and vermicompost for improving productivity of high quality crops and enhancing nutritional content.
My flexibility and versatile knowledge has enabled me to integrate different aspects of plant physiology. From practical and economical perspectives, my research findings have contributed to improved health-care, food and nutritional security as well as poverty alleviation. I have reported on the potential of new class of cytokinins (topolins) in alleviating challenges such as somaclonal variation and hyperhydricity often experienced during tissue-culture of some economically important crops. I have also demonstrated the regulatory role of plant growth regulators in phytochemical production and biological efficacy of economically-important plants.
As a highly prolific and productive scientist, I have authored/co-authored 65 peer-reviewed articles which have been cited 770 times (h-index of 13 and i10-index of 17) since 2009 (Google Scholar). On average, I author/co-author 9 articles per year (since 2012) and published in top ranking journals (Plant Science and Alga Research) in my field. I have been involved with and trained more than 9 postgraduate students, which exemplifies my strength as an individual with keen passion for human resources development. In recognition of my academic achievement to Science in South Africa, I was recognized by the National Research Foundation (NRF, November, 2016) as a Young Promising Scientist with a Y-rating.
