Research summary
I have a dual appointment as Professor of Medical Physics and Professor of Heritage Science. My heritage science group is applying imaging techniques to aspects of heritage imaging with the UCL Institute for Sustainable Heritage (ISH), of which I am Deputy Director. Predominantly, this has involved multispectral imaging and hyperspectral imaging. In medical physics, my main research area is in developing diffuse optical tomography for functional brain imaging of adults and children, building upon my previous research, which led to the first 3D electrical impedance images of adult brain function and the first 3D optical tomography images of the neonatal head. I also have research interests in radiotherapy and broader medical imaging.
I have been Research Director in UCL Medical Physics & Biomedical Engineering for 8 years, leading the Department through REF2014 (where we were the highest ranked biomedical engineering submission) and REF2021. We have one of the highest research incomes per academic of any Russell Group department and have been awarded >10 prestigious 5-year personal Fellowships in that time. I am also the Infrastructure Lead in UCL ISH. I lead the UK’s contribution to IPERION HS, a major EU research infrastructure grant which is part of a series of grants that aims to become a European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC).
I have received >£2.5M in grant income as Principal Investigator on 19 grants and >£4.5M as Co-Investigator on 14 grants. I have held an EPSRC Advanced Research Fellowship and an EPSRC Challenging Engineering Award. I am an author on >80 papers in peer-reviewed journals and >100 conference proceedings.
