In 2007, Prof. van der Lugt expanded his research on imaging biomarkers in large population based studies,including the ‘Rotterdam Study’ examining the causes of disabling diseases in the elderly, and ‘Generation R,’ examining human development from pre-natal to puberty. Within these epidemiological studies, Prof. van der Lugt is responsible for the imaging infrastructure. He is also actively involved in BBMRI (Biobanking and Biomolecular Resources Research Infrastructure) and was responsible for Population Imaging in the Euro-BioImaging Preparatory Phase as well as being a Node Applicant under this program. He was PI of the MR CLEAN trial and the MR CLEAN registry and currently WP Leader in CONTRAST, the Collaboration for new treatments of acute Stroke. In this 11M funded consortium he is responsible for centralised image storage and analysis. Prof. van der Lugt has had a long and distinguished career. Shortly after completing his residency in Radiology, he was awarded a coveted Clinical Fellowship by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research for a project on the detection of atherosclerotic disease with advanced CT techniques. He has amassed over €5,000,000 in research funding, including an European Regional Development Fund project to improve and expand the population imaging infrastructure in South Holland. He has participated in several large European consortia and supervised more than 25 PhD students. Prof. van der Lugt has coauthored>450 peer-reviewed journal articles which have been cited >6,000 times, and he published 40 chapters. As of Sept 2019, Prof. van der Lugt’s h-index is 54 (Scopus). Prof. van der Lugt is a member of the Research Committee of the European Society of Radiology (ESR). HE is nominated as delegate for the EuroBioImaging ERIC Board.
