Die derzeitigen Hauptarbeitsgebiete umfassen Physiologie, Biochemie und Genetik (i) des Stoffwechsels von Polyhydroxyfettsäuren (ii) Biosynthese mikrobieller Polyamide - besonders Cyanophycin und Polyglutamat, (iii) mikrobieller Abbau von natürlichen und chemosynthetischen Polymeren - besonders Kautschuke, (iv) mikrobielle Transformation und Biosynthese natürlicher Aromastoffe - besonders Vanillin, (v) Biosyntherse von Triglyceriden und Wachsestern in Bakterien, (vi) mikrobieller Abbau von Acetoin, (vii) Regulation des Gärungsstoffwechsels in obligat aeroben Bakterien.
