Bio
A. P. G. Castro's career started with a masters project (one year, part of a five years Biomedical Engineering program) on the development of a new femoral component for patellofemoral prosthesis (collaboration between University of Minho and University of Aveiro), which was recognised by Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa for its contribution to the improvement of the life quality of elderly people. Two peer-reviewed publications highlighted the quality of this early stage work.
Next, the doctoral thesis in Biomedical Engineering was mostly devoted to model the biomechanical behaviour of the IVD. Individual competitive funding from Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia was granted for the four years of this project (collaboration between University of Minho, Technological University of Eindhoven and VU Medical Centre Amsterdam), which was dedicated to the poroelastic modelling of the IVD. This doctoral thesis involved the development, implementation and validation of a new formulation for biphasic media. Two peer-reviewed publications, two indexed conference papers (plus several conference presentations) and one book chapter were published as a result of this work.
During a first post-doctoral period (two years), A. P. G. Castro has worked on the biomechanical modelling of biomaterials for bone healing and regeneration, namely scaffolds and soft-tissue related hydrogels. Three peer-reviewed papers were published, along with one book chapter.
During the second post-doctoral period (one year), the PA has combined different medical imaging modalities towards poroelastic modelling of infant femurs, in order to evaluate injuries potentially caused by child abuse through numerical evaluation of soft tissue. One peer-reviewed publication is under review. Both of these post-doctoral periods were spent at the University of Sheffield.
A. P. G. Castro currently combines research and lecturing duties, being Resarch Fellow at IDMEC (Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon), Invited Lecturer at Universidade Atlântica and Lecturer at Instituto Politécnico de Setúbal. His research line is focused on the computational modelling of biomedical materials, namely soft biomaterials and scaffolds for bone tissue engineering. On the teaching side, he has been lecturing several modules in the areas of Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering and Biomechanics.
Parallel to this research career path, A. P. G. Castro has also achieved a post-graduation in Management of Health Institutions (one year), as a complement to his Engineering background.
