Bio
Alberto Muñoz (Murcia, Spain, 1958) is Research Professor at the Instituto de Investigaciones Biomédicas, Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), in Madrid. He received his Ph.D. in Sciences at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid in 1983. He worked at Antibióticos S.A. (Research Dept., Madrid, 1984-1986) on the mechanism of action of interferon and interleukin-2. Later, he joined Björn Vennström' group at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL, Heidelberg, 1986-1988) to study the biology of the erbA oncogene, contributing to the characterization of the c-erbA protein as the high affinity thyroid hormone receptor (Nature, 1986). Then, he moved to the Institut für Molekulare Pathologie (IMP, Genentech-Boehringer Ingelheim, Vienna, 1990-1991) to continue working on c-erbA and v-erbA genes at Hartmut Beug´s laboratory. Back to Madrid in 1991, he conducted studies on the gene regulatory effects of thyroid hormone/c-erbA in the brain and the mammary gland, and on the antagonism of AP-1 transcription factor by glucocorticoids. Since 2000, his laboratory is focused on the action of vitamin D and its receptor VDR in human colon cancer: identification and study of target genes, regulation of VDR expression, effects on cell phenotype and interference of the Wnt/beta-catenin pathway. In recent years, his group has initiated the study of vitamin D action on normal and cancer stem cells setting up the culture of colon normal and tumor organoids from colorectal cancer patients, and on normal and cancer-associated fibroblasts isolated from colon tumors.
Main scientific contributions: 1) Characterization of c-erbA gene product as the high affinity thyroid hormone receptor (TR). 2) Comparative analysis of c-erbA and v-erbA action. 3) Effect of thyroid hormone and TRs on brain development and in breast epithelial cells. 4) Description of a novel mechanism of the pharmacological action of glucocorticoids: antogonism of AP-1 factor via JNK inhibition. 5) Mechanism of action of vitamin D and its receptor VDR in human colon carcinoma cells: E-cadherin induction and multilevel antagonism of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway. 6) Characterization of the effects of vitamin D of gene expression and phenotype of stromal normal and cancer-associated fibroblasts from colon cancer patients. 7) Differential action of vitamin D on stemness/differentiation and gene profiles in patient-derived colon normal and tumor organoids.
He has held a number of management positions: Coordinator of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the National Agency for Scientific Evaluation (ANEP, 1997-2000), and at the Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia (2001-2006), and member and Deputy Coordinator of Biology and Biomedicine at CSIC (2000-2008). He belongs or belonged to the Scientific Advisory Board of several Institutions in Spain: Centro de Investigación del Cáncer, Salamanca; Centro de Investigación Príncipe Felipe, Valencia; Instituto de Universitario de Oncología del Principado de Asturias, Oviedo; Instituto de Investigación Biomédica de la Universidad de León, since 2015; and Instituto Ramón y Cajal de Investigación Sanitaria, Madrid, since 2014; and he has served as member of the Comité Asesor 3 (Biología Celular y Molecular) Comisión Nacional Evaluadora de la Actividad Investigadora (CNEAI), 2016 y 2017. Councillor of the Scientific Foundation of the Spanish Cancer Society (2007-2014).
