Bio
Aitor Marzo carried out the doctoral thesis in the Applied Physics Department of the Universidad de Almería (UAL) at the Plataforma Solar de Almería (PSA), which belongs to the Centro De Investigaciones Energéticas Medioambientales y Tecnológicas (CIEMAT), Spain. Aitor developed most of his work in this European center for research, development and testing of concentrating solar technologies.
He currently works as researcher at Solar Energy Research Center (SERC-Chile) and at Centro de Desarrollo Energético Antofagasta (CDEA) in University of Antofagasta (UA), where he holds the position of assistant professor. He does research in Applied Physics in the field of Radiometry applied to Solar Energy Technologies, which involves researches in measurement techniques development, broadband and narrowband solar resource assessment, optics, soiling, and modelling, among others.
His background is chiefly in radiometry. Aitor has experience in technical aspects of radiometry (such as calibration techniques and the commissioning of new instruments), understanding and handling of optical systems and detectors, the use of weather station radiation instruments, spectroradiometers, modelling of experimental data and its uncertainties.
During the last 6 years of work in Chile, he has been the principal investigator of the area of Territorial Characterization and Radiometry of the CDEA at the University of Antofagasta. The responsibilities acquired in this position have been the application and allocation of funds for the execution of projects, the purchase of instruments and the configuration of the laboratories, as well as coordinating the activities of the area and forming the teamwork. Currently, the teamwork of the Area of Territorial Characterization and Radiometry of the CDEA is composed of Aitor Marzo as leader, two PhD student and two electronic engineers.
He has also helped to form the national and international collaboration networks of the CDEA, incorporating prestigious international centers such as CIEMAT, Deutschen Zentrums für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR), University of Huelva and University of Almería. At the national level, he works in collaboration with national research centers belonging to the Pontifical University Catholic of Chile, the University of Chile, the Fraunhofer Chile Research Center, Federico Santa María University, and the Northern Catholic University.
Currently, he is the main researcher of two projects (167k€ and 479k€) and the leader of Work Package 5 on Atamos Tec project (total aprox. funding 17000k€).
From the academic point of view, Aitor has directed 2 master theses and, to date, is directing another master thesis and a PhD thesis within the Doctoral Program of Energy of our Faculty of Engineering, to date.
His main goal is to develop his skills as physicist. Aitor has a lot of passion for his profession. He is enthusiastic, reliable, dedicated, easy going, and I enjoy working in team.
