Albino Martins is an Assistant Researcher (2015-present), an elected member of the Scientific Council (2018-present) and of the Council Unit (2021-present) of the I3B’s - Research Institute on Biomaterials, Biodegradables and Biomimetics of University of Minho. He is graduated in Applied Biology (1998-2002) and completed a PhD in Tissue Engineering, Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cells (in collaboration with University of Vigo; 2006-2010). He started his research activity (2003-2005) at the Life and Health Sciences Research Institute, Health Sciences School, University of Minho.
Albino Martins’ research is focused on the development of nanostructures (i.e. nanofibers and nanoparticles) functionalized with bioactive factors (i.e. antibodies, soluble GFs and extracellular vesicles, or ECM proteins) or natural compounds (i.e. fucoidan, chitosan, chondroitin sulfate) aiming to implement personalized and target therapies. The biofunctional nanofibers were able to direct cellular activity (maturation or differentiation of human cells) without the need of exogenous stimuli. By its side, the biofunctional nanoparticles were designed to specifically address tumor cells (primary and metastatic) inducing their death, without affecting surrounding healthy cells.
As outcomes of the research activity, Albino Martins authored 80 publications in international peer review journals (12 as first and 15 as corresponding author) with a total of >3700 citations, resulting in a h-index of 34 (Scopus ID). He is also an author of 16 chapters (6 as first author) published in international books. Regarding scientific dissemination activities, Albino made 140 communications in national and international conferences (47 oral presentations and 93 posters), being an Organizing Committee member of 4 of them.
Concerning technological development and intellectual property protection, Albino is inventor of 3 granted European Patents, 2 patent applications under regional (EPO and USPTO) examination and 2 International Patent applications. It is important to highlight his participation in the entrepreneurship programs COHiTEC 2011 from COTEC, and BGI 6th edition from MIT Portugal program.
As project management capabilities, Albino Martins was the Principal Investigator of an Exploratory Project (2015-2020; 42k€) and 2 Institutional projects (2017, 20k€), and the Scientific Coordinator of 4 national projects (2005-2020; 622.3k€) financed by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). He was/is also a Team Member of 2 European projects (FP6 and FP7 funding; 2004-2012; 793.5k€), 8 other national projects (FCT funding; 2008-2025; 1736.4k€) and 2 other Institutional projects (20k€). He was also granted with two individual fellowships (i.e. a PhD (2006-2009) and a Post-Doc (2011-2013)) and an Investigator FCT starting grant (2015-2020; 345k€).
As an international recognition of research excellence, Albino Martins is an Associated Editor (2021-present) of the ‘Frontiers in Pharmacology’ journal (JIF 5.988), Editorial Board Member (2019-present) of the ‘Biomolecules’ journal (JIF 6.064) and an invited Guest Editor (Special Issue; 2019) of the ‘Nanomaterials’ journal (JIF 5.791). He is usually an invited Referee of 67 international scientific journals and expert Reviewer for public financing entities from different countries (i.e. Romania, Czech Republic, Italy, Cyprus, Poland and Kazakhstan).
Albino Martins was also awarded with a grant (honorable mention) from the Portuguese Association of Urology (APU; 2018), the STAR award from the Education and Professional Development Committee of the Society for Biomaterials (SFB; 2014), a grant from the Portuguese Society of Digestive Endoscopy (SPED; 2013) and the Best Thesis in 2010 by the School of Engineering.
As part of educational activity, Albino Martins has (co)supervised 7 PhD students (1 ongoing), 11 MSc students and 2 Post-Docs, and train 127 researchers under ISO 9001:2015 certification. He also participated in the jury of 4 Master thesis defenses as main examiner, as well as in 1 PhD thesis Viva. Furthermore, he was also invited to lecture in several Advanced Courses, Workshops and post-graduations, as well as in Master and Doctoral programmes.
