Dr. Amal Kar (b. 1950), was associated with the Central Arid Zone Research Institute (CAZRI), Jodhpur, from 1974 to 2012, where he contributed to the researches on desert geomorphology, desertification, natural resources assessment and monitoring, and applications of geomatics in Earth resources studies, with special reference to Thar Desert. Some of his contributions include the discovery of palaeochannels of the Saraswati River system, as well as potential shallow aquifers along them in the dune-infested terrain, new understanding of the formation and evolution of Thar Desert landscape, including the sand dunes, the playas and other landforms, palaeo-environmental reconstruction from desert sediments, understanding of desert floods and flood routes, neotectonics, impacts of human pressures and climate change on land degradation in arid India, and indices for measuring wind erosion and erosivity. Apart from serving as a researcher at CAZRI, Dr. Kar was also the Head of the Division of Natural Resources and Environment, and Head of Research Coordination and Monitoring. He contributed to the UN system for Desertification as a Consultant (for Benchmarks & Indicators), as a Resource Person (for Early Warning Systems), and as a Trainer (for international researchers). He received a Science & Technology Fellowship to Japan (1999) and the ICAR Award (1983). He was also a Visiting Professor at Tokyo University (2001) for teaching desertification. Dr. Kar has more than 160 publications in research journals and books, including a few edited books. He was an Editor of the international journal, Sustainability Science, Springer Verlag (2006-2011), and of a national journal, Annals of Arid Zone (1994-2012). He is associated with some of the Learned Societies in India, and was a past president of the Indian Institute of Geomorphologists. He is a vice-president of the Geographical Society of India. Dr. Amal Kar now lives in Kolkata, works as an independent researcher, and provides academic help to the best of capabilities. He served as a short-term Visiting Fellow in some of the Indian Universities for teaching. He was a Member of the Expert Committee on Palaeochannels, constituted by the Ministry of Water Resources, Govt. of India (2016). He also served recently in the review committees of some earth-science institutes for improving their performances.
