Current research in my group is focused on two-phase microfluidics, fluid-structure interaction, wetting and flows of complex fluids. Applications range from chocolate moulding to pulmonary airway reopening, via technological applications such as flexible POLED displays. A long-standing interest is the influence of vessel geometry on the modes of bubble propagation and liquid recovery on the pore-scale. The presence of a fluid interface that is inherently nonlinear means that complex dynamics occur even for slow flows where inertial forces are negligible. Our experimental approach often leads to unexpected observations, which we follow up with a programme of careful experimentation and modelling under the umbrella of the Manchester Centre for Nonlinear Dynamics.
