Bio
Dr. Mohammad Aminul Islam is an Assistant Professor at Washington State University's Paul G. Allen School for Global Health. He obtained his B.Sc. (Hons) and M.Sc. in Microbiology from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. Dr. Islam then worked at the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b) for two years before pursuing his Ph.D. in food microbiology at Wageningen University, Netherlands, which he completed in 2009. Following his Ph.D., he spent ten years as an independent scientist at icddr,b, where he established the food safety research group and food microbiology research lab, significantly contributing to food safety research in Bangladesh. Dr. Islam received the Global Health Equity Scholars (GHES) post-doctoral fellowship from the Fogarty International Center at the NIH in 2012. His primary research areas include food safety, antimicrobial resistance, and One Health. His research focuses on understanding the major drivers for the carriage of antibiotic-resistant bacteria among individuals in low-and middle-income countries, particularly in Bangladesh. Dr. Islam employs molecular epidemiological approaches to investigate the emergence and transmission of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and resistome among humans, food-producing animals, and shared environments. His overarching objective is to discover effective and scalable interventions for reducing the burden of antimicrobial resistance in these settings. Dr. Islam's research has received funding from prestigious organizations such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the UK research council, the World Health Organization (WHO), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Dr. Islam serves as an Adjunct Scientist at icddr,b and was a member of the WHO Advisory Group on Integrated Surveillance of Antimicrobial Resistance (WHO-AGISAR).
