I completed my undergraduate degree in Biomedical Science at the University of Newcastle (Honours) in 2006. I became very interested in the respiratory system and how infections affected the progression and severity of disease, so I proceeded with a career in immunology and microbiology and completed my PhD in 2011 also at the University of Newcastle. My first post-doc project continued on from my PhD looking at the role of Haemophilus influenza in asthma. I moved to Brisbane mid-2016 where I continued my passion for respiratory disease research and joined the Lung Inflammation and Infection group at QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute, where the goal is to improve the quality of life for CF and other chronic airways disease patients.
My current research interests involve iron and the role it plays in chronic airways disease such as cystic fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma. Our group has shown the crucial and novel contribution of iron in respiratory disease pathogenesis and exacerbation. I am also very interested in respiratory bacterial infections and how they exacerbate and potentially predispose to more severe chronic lung disease. I am especially interested in Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Haemophilus influenzae bacterial infections and the immune and inflammatory responses that they induce that drive deleterious effects in the airway.
Our team has made major novel contributions demonstrating how iron and its regulation and metabolism drive some of the disease features seen in cystic fibrosis and asthma, as well as how iron in pregnancy affects respiratory disease in later life. I have also made significant contributions to the knowledge and understanding of the role of bacterial infections in airway disease pathogenesis. I have published a total of 27 research articles in leading respiratory and immunology journals such as Thorax, the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, PLoS Pathogens, Mucosal Immunology and Frontiers in Microbiology. I have developed a number of novel mouse models of Haemophilus influenzae respiratory infection and H. influenza infection in asthma. These novel mouse models were the first to show the mechanisms of chronic respiratory disease and how infections combine with allergic airways disease to induce features of severe steroid-resistant asthma.
