个人简介
My scientific career has focused on the study of Neuroscience and the development of drugs to prevent and to blunt the consequences of different disorders. Over the last six years, I studied the relationship between psychiatric (2016 and 2017) and neurological neonatal disorders (2017-2021) and blood brain barrier disruption and inflammation to improve the development of new therapeutic drugs. During my PhD (2017-2021), I also developed a new rat animal that mimics the pathophysiology and motor and cognitive disability of hemorrhagic cerebral palsy in premature infants. Besides, I have also collaborated with Pharmaceutical Industries as GW Pharma Ltd. to test different treatments based on cannabinoid-derived compounds such as CBD. These studies resulted in the development of a new clinical trial to test the efficacy of cannabidiol in the prevention of infant cerebral palsy secondary to hypoxic/ischemic insult. Moreover, I have tested the efficacy of these cannabinoids-derived compounds in seizure acquisition in our hypoxic-ischemic rat model. Besides, I tested how the prevention of inflammation and BBB disruption with cannabinoid treatment resulted in a reduction of seizure threshold leaded PTZ administration one month after the insult.
My background in neuroscience (particularly in the field of the neuroinflammation and white matter injury), and drug and animal model development allow me to join the Department of Pharmacy at the University of Washington in 2021. We support the development and characterization of novel animal models for the preclinical evaluation of investigational therapies for epilepsy in special patient populations, including patients with pharmacoresistant epilepsy and elderly patients with epilepsy. We also aim to define the extent to which aging and aging-related neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's Disease additively impact seizure susceptibility, pharmacotherapeutic response, and long-term disease outcomes as SUDEP.
