个人简介
Dr. Alavi’s multidisciplinary research involves advancing the knowledge and technology required to create multifunctional architected material and structural systems with self-diagnostic and self-powering capabilities for a broad range of sensing and monitoring applications. His research goal is to harness the power of these technologies enhanced by engineering informatics for tackling problems in the fields of civil infrastructure, construction, aerospace, and biomedical engineering. Dr. Alavi is pioneering the field of “self-powered monitoring”, where the operating power of the smart embedded sensing systems is directly harvested from the signal being monitored. Recently, he has coined the groundbreaking concept of “self-aware metamaterials” which enables creating nano-, micro-, and macro-scale architected materials and structures with a wide range of advanced functionalities including sensing, energy harvesting, data storage, digital computation, programmability, and mechanical tunability. His team pushes the limits of this technology even further to build the foundations for the so-called "engineered self-aware structures" that can operate similar to complex living organisms without using any external power source or additional electronics. In addition, Dr. Alavi’s original and seminal contributions to developing and deploying advanced machine learning and bio-inspired computational techniques have established a road map for their broad applications in various engineering domains. Dr. Alavi has authored 8 books and near 200 publications in archival journals, book chapters, and conference proceedings. He has received a number of award certificates for his journal articles. He is among the Google Scholar 200 Most Cited Authors in Civil Engineering, Web of Science ESI's World Top 1% Scientific Minds in 2018, and Stanford University list of Top 1% Scientists in the World in 2020. He is the editor/guest editor of several journals such as Measurement, Sensors, Case Studies in Construction Material, Automation in Construction, ASCE-ASME Journal of Risk and Uncertainty in Engineering Systems, and Advances in Mechanical Engineering.
