Dr. Wolf is an established researcher and internationally-renowned clinician in the field of burn and trauma care. After residency in General Surgery at the University of Missouri – Kansas City in 1995, he completed Research and Clinical Fellowships in Burn, Trauma, and Critical Care at the Shriners Hospital and the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB). From there, he joined the Faculty in the Department of Surgery at UTMB, where he rose to the rank of Associate Professor with tenure before accepting the position of Director of the Burn Center at the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research and Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center – San Antonio (UTHSCSA) during the Iraqi and Afghani conflicts. In 2008, Dr Wolf was named the Betty and Bob Kelso Distinguished Chair in Burns and Trauma at UTHSCSA and Vice-Chairman for Research in the Department of Surgery. In 2011, Dr Wolf brought his skills to UT Southwestern as the Vice-Chairman for Research and the Burn Section Chief. His training in burns, critical care, and research is comprehensive, which he has used over the last 19 years to become an established and world-renowned researcher and clinician in the field of burns, trauma, and metabolism.
Dr. Wolf has 302 published research articles of which 220 were peer-reviewed with some in leading journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, and Annals of Surgery. He received an NIH R-01 grant investigating the effects of insulin treatment in the severely burned as Principal Investigator, and served as the Principal Investigator on two other grants from the Shriner’s hospital (approximately $250,000/year in total). He also received a three grants from the Department of Defense $1.42M) for similar work, and was the Task Area Manager for Clinical Trials at the US Army Institute of Surgical Research, where he was responsible for managing a $1.5M/year research budget. He is also the Principal Investigator of an $8M grant through the American Burn Association for 5 separate and distinct prospective clinical trials in burns.
Steve is a National and International leader in the field of burns, trauma, and surgery. He is a member of 23 Medical Societies, serving on governance committees in 9. He currently serves as the Editor-in-Chief for Burns, the journal of the International Society of Burn Injury, and sits on the Editorial Board for The Journal of Burn Care and Rehabilitation. He has also been an invited reviewer in 28 other journals, including the Lancet, Annals of Surgery, Pediatrics, American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, and Critical Care Medicine. He has been invited to speak around the world in Europe, Turkey, Singapore, Mexico, Vietnam, China, Brasil, Australia, and New Zealand about the work he is doing. He has served on several Veterans’ Administration Merit Award Study Sections, and is a member of the Shriners’ Hospitals for Children Research Advisory Board.
