Career Trajectory
Bio
I am working as an Professor in Faculty of Civil Engineering in Southeast University in Nanjing China. since 2022. Between 2019-2022, I served to Oslo Metropolitan University as Associate Professo. From 2016 to 2019, I worked as an Associate Professor in department of structural engineering at Chongqing Jiaotong University, China. I also worked as a department director at R&D Department of Central Research Institute of Building and Construction at China Metallurgical Group Corporation (MCC) for 4 years and I obtained my PhD degree in Structural Engineering from the University of German Armed Forces Munich, Germany in 2011. I specialise in civil engineering applications that integrate BIM with reality capture and cash sensing, particularly in transport infrastructure O&M applications, whole-life and long-life performance assessment and enhancement of structures and facilities based on digital twin theory.
With 13 years working experience in 3 international public universities and one research institution in the field of Civil Engineering, I have rich experience of both research and industry in structural health monitoring of civil infrastructure with remote sensing technology, Building Information Modelling and Management theory and practice.
My research threads I’ve nurtured over my career are all centered around re-ality capture and structural simulation issues, that bear directly on evaluating construction quality and long-term structural performance. My output in-cludes a balance of discipline-focused and discipline-spanning articles. While I have explored different research topics over the years, the common thread is the application of laser-based remote and distributed sensing tech-niques to remotely and visually quantify the structural construction quality and precisely measure and analyze displacements and strains in different parts of the structure. These include the use of photogrammetry, sensors and laser scanning to describe structural geometry, load, performance and dam-age, to inform structural assessments and time-variant FEM calculation and to build an updating digital twin model.
For research activities, I have led and worked in more than 31 research and service projects. As principal investigator and applicator, I have led 28 projects with a total contract amount of £ 4.38 M, including 15 R&D projects (total £ 3.41 M), of which 13 were funded by enterprises (£ 3.15 M) and 2 public funded projects (£ 0.26 M).
As the Principal Investigator (PI), I have fostered a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment that draws on the collective expertise of engineers, researchers, surveyor, computer scientist and structuralist. This inclusive leadership style has proved very successful. In just short few years (since 2017), with the continuous projects funding, my team has published 19 refereed journal papers and 17 refereed conference papers, with many more in various stages of submission and revision.
I have been called upon to teach a wide array of courses in the department of Civil Engineering. I am equally at traditional undergraduate engineering classes (Intro to Concrete Structure and Building Information Modelling) and specialized graduate courses (Building Information Modelling). I have taught in a variety of settings from large lecture courses of a class of 200 undergraduate students to labs of less than 10 graduate students, and was involved in developing course content, assessments, learning objectives and grading quizzes and exams. Application-based teaching of lectures, workshops, small group facilitation, online-courses and exams is continually integrated in my courses.
