Jiang Xie, MD, PhD
Director, Centre for Sleep Medicine, Vice Director, Department of Respiratory and Critical Medicine, Beijing Anzhen Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing, China.
In 2022, Jiang Xie, MD, PhD, was honored with a Mayo Clinic Proceedings highly cited author award, which was developed to acknowledge articles for their meaningful contribution to the Journal's Impact Factor.
Dr Xie serves as the director for the Centre for Sleep Medicine and vice director for the Department of Respiratory and Critical Medicine at Beijing Anzhen Hospital (Beijing, China). Following his medical education, he obtained his doctorate degree from Capital Medical University in Beijing and completed his post-doctoral training at Mayo Clinic.
Specializing in treating cardiac patients with critical respiratory conditions in one of the largest heart centers in China, his work focuses on management of patients with severe respiratory impairment following major cardiovascular procedures.
Dr Xie’s research interests focus on the respiratory and cardiovascular implications of sleep disorders. He and his team have been studying the role of poor sleep, particularly sleep-disordered breathing, and in the development, progression, and prognosis of cardiovascular diseases using both preclinical models and patient populations. He leads a multidisciplinary team consisting of medical residents, clinical fellows, and postgraduate students, and his work is supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and various other funding agencies.
Dr Xie volunteered as a frontline responder during the first documented outbreak of COVID-19, in January 2020, in Wuhan, China. While leading a medical team treating severe COVID-19 patients, he was among the very first to complete and report studies on the impact of COVID-19 on hypoxemia and mortality. His findings, published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings, contributed to shed light on the pathophysiology and outcomes of the infection, which were largely elusive at that time.
He has published dozens of articles in other peer-reviewed journals that provide guidance for the treatment of COVID-19 and other diseases affecting the respiratory system.
