As with any academic journey, there will inevitably be challenges along the way. However, it is important to remember never to give up and always maintain a positive attitude. With determination and perseverance, anything is possible. As the saying goes, where there is a will, there is a way.
Biography:
Dr. Shisong Cao (also known as ‘’曹诗颂‘’) holds several important positions at Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture. He is the Director of the Center for Urbanization and Climate Change (CUC2), the Assistant Director of the School of Geomatics and Urban Spatial Informatics, and an Assistant Professor of Geographical Information System (GIS). He is also a member of the CAST UN Consultative Committee on Information and Communication Technology, a member of the International Commission on Climate Change and Disaster Management Science, and a visiting scholar at the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom.
Cao earned his Ph.D. degree in geography from Capital Normal University in 2019. His remarkable contributions to spatial information technology (SIT) applications in China's poverty alleviation efforts earned him the prestigious First Prize of the Science and Technology Progress (STP) Award from the Chinese Association of Geographic Information Society (CAGIS) in 2017. The coupling system of poverty reduction and GIS, which he and his supervisor developed, has been extensively utilized in poverty alleviation initiatives, benefiting the largest impoverished population worldwide (details can be found at https://www.bjcc.gov.cn/vplay/3/0/0/107558.html). In recognition of his academic achievements, Cao was selected for the Beijing Science and Technology Youth Talent Support Program in 2021 and awarded the title of "One Hundred Pacesetter of Graduate Party Member" in 2018, an honor bestowed upon only 100 master's and doctoral students every two years in China. In 2020, he received the Second Prize of the STP Award from the Ministry of Education of China for his contributions to urban renewal and Internet of Things applications in Beijing city. Cao was also given another First Prize of the STP Award from CAGIS in 2022 for his significant contributions to urban remote sensing. Additionally, he received outstanding graduate honors from the government of Beijing, China and the prestigious "4th May" Youth Medal from Capital Normal University in 2019, which is awarded to young teachers and students under the age of 45. Cao's accomplishments have also led him to be recognized as one of the First Graduate Annual Persons of CNU in 2018, being the only Ph.D. candidate to receive this honor.
So far, Cao has published three academic monographs and over 50 peer-reviewed papers, with more than 40 papers indexed in SCI. He serves as an external reviewer for prestigious domestic and international journals such as ISPRS Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, and IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing. His expertise in remote sensing, urban planning, thermal environment, and global climate change has led him to be invited to organize many special issues for influential journals.
Cao's research primarily focuses on land-use and land-cover changes, urban climatology, GIS, remote sensing, and sustainable development. His research has been supported by funding agencies including the National Natural Science Foundation, the National Key Research and Development Program, and the Beijing Municipal Education Commission.
