Bio
Dr. Joseph Thornton is Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry with the University of Florida College of Medicine. Dr. Thornton joined the University of Florida College of Medicine faculty in the spring of 2010 as Assistant Professor of Psychiatry.
Dr. Thornton has been on the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of South Florida. From 1996 to 2003, Dr. Thornton was on the faculty of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He was the Medical Director of the Inpatient Psychiatry Unit at University Hospital, founded the Safe Family Project (prevention of family violence) and co-founded the University Clinical Psychopharmacology Laboratory. He has over two- dozen publications and several teaching awards. From 2003 to 2010 Dr. Thornton served as the Medical Executive Director for the North Florida Evaluation and Treatment Center (NFETC). While at NFETC he founded the Alachua Area Medical Reserve Corps.
Dr. Thornton, joined the University of Florida College of Medicine faculty in the spring of 2010 as Assistant Professor of Psychiatry. He served 2 years as an attending faculty physician on the adult inpatient psychiatry unit at UF Shands Psychiatric Hospital. In 2012 he moved to the Malcom Randall Veterans Hospital and served as Chief of the Psychiatry Consultation Liaison Services and in that role he co-founded the Delirium Team Services. He served as Acting Chief of the Psychiatry Service and then the Associate Chief of Staff for Mental Health Services of the North Florida /South Georgia Veterans Health System from 2015 to 2018. In September 2015 he co-founded and is Head of the UF-VA Unit of the International Chair of Bioethics, a World Medical Association Cooperating Center (formerly the UNESCO Bioethics Unit of Haifa). From 2018 to 2020 Dr. Thornton served as the Chief of Psychiatry Services for UFHealth Shands Hospital. During his brief retirement in late 2020 and early 2021 he studied the ethics of artificial intelligence. He now devotes his clinical work to teaching obesity management to psychiatry residents and academic efforts on teaching the ethics of artificial intelligence.
