Career Trajectory
Bio
General:
V.G. Rumynin is the Head of Saint Petersburg Div., Institute of Environmental Geology of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He is a professor of Hydrogeology Department at Saint Petersburg State University. Prof. Rumynin began his scientific career at Leningrad (St. Petersburg) Mining Institute as a researcher, where he received Ph.D. (1981) and then Sc.D. (1987) degree in hydrogeology. In 2003 Dr. Rumynin was elected in the Russian Academy of Sciences as a corresponding member.
Specialization:
(i) Main field: environmental hydrogeology, derivation of the analytical models of the subsurface solute transport, development of site characterization techniques, site-scale modeling of groundwater flow and solute transport processes;
(ii) Current research interests: model development for flow and solute transport in stochastically generated fractured media, TTD assessment, impact assessment coursed by nonpoint spatially variable sources of contamination, predicting hazardous waste disposal in geological formations, and radionuclide transport with runoff.
National research projects: Supervised the research on groundwater protection from contamination for more than 20 mining enterprises across the country. Was a principal investigator of research projects dealing with studies of radionuclide transport processes at radioactively contaminated sites and sites of NPP’s potential impact. Under his supervision and guidance two national projects related to long-term safety assessment of the deep disposal of RadWaste in the clay (St. Petersburg area) and fractured gneiss formations (Krasnoyarsk region) have been carried out.
International projects and grants: Principal investigator of a EC Project RaCoS in the framework of Inco-Copernicus program (1997–2000); team leader of a Joint Research Project supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation (2000-2003); coordinator and team leader of several Research Projects supported by the International Science and Technology Center (ISTC) (2000-2011). Commercial and research projects related to oversees NPPs (Hungary, Egypt, Iran, Uzbekistan) (2015–2020).
