Bio
Sergey A. Maskevich (born on 1 August 1953 in the village Bykovka, Shchuchin district, Grodno region, BSSR) — Belarusian statesman, the deputy of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly, Minister of Education of the Republic of Belarus from 29 December 2010 to 27 December 2014. Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (1995), professor.
He graduated from Teachers' Training Institute in Grodno in 1974 majoring in physics. He took up postgraduate study at the Institute of Biochemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the BSSR. In 1983, he defended his thesis on physical and mathematical sciences, worked at the Department of General and Theoretical Physics. In 1995, he defended his doctoral thesis in physical and mathematical sciences; the same year he became Vice-rector for Research. From 1997 until 2005, he was the Rector of Y.Kupala Grodno State University. He is the author of more than 250 scientific works on molecular physics and management in education.
Deputy of the Grodno Regional Council of Deputies of the 23rd and 24th convocations. Since 2005, he was the Deputy of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus, where he headed the Permanent Commission on International Affairs and National Security. As the Chairman of the Commission, Maskevich repeatedly made statements in the media - in particular, around the issue of the recognition of the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
On 29 December 2010, he was appointed as the Minister of Education of the Republic of Belarus. On 27 December 2014, Mikhail A. Zhuravkov succeeded him.
On 3 September 2015, Sergey Maskevich became the Director of the International Sakharov Environmental Institute, which became part of the Belarusian State University.
